Welcome to the St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church Website

"Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." - Romans 15:7

Through this web site, we are pleased to be able to introduce you to that same worship and fellowship as it is expressed in the life of our Parish. If you are a new member of our parish, or are considering membership, these web pages will acquaint you with what our parish offers to those who give it support and sustenance; to those who already belong to the church, we hope they will provide you with the assurance that your sacrificial offerings are received with profound respect, and are utilized to maximum effectiveness. They will, in any case, enable you to make the informed decisions that are necessary for a meaningful relationship with your church.

Statement of the Parish of St. Iakovos

Greek Orthodox Church

A recent incident in the public square of downtown Valparaiso, IN has made it necessary to reiterate the one eternal truth that has always been at the center of our Parish of St. Iakovos. The Parish Family of St. Iakovos, as does our Holy Orthodox Church, denounces, and will always denounce any action, language or display of hate, violence, bigotry, or racism. No such action, display or verbiage is ever acceptable.

In accordance with the teachings, example, and directive of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we will always seek to love all peoples and individuals who strive to live in the peace and harmony of God’s will for His Creation. The teachings of the Holy Orthodox Church are clear through Holy Scripture and the Holy Tradition of the Church Fathers that the Love of God must always be its aim for all Her children.  The Church will always be a place of refuge and hospital for those individuals and people who turn to the Church for the healing of their souls through Holy Confession, genuine repentance, and compunction to restore themselves in the eyes of the Church, its people and especially in the mercy, love, and light of our one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Parish Family of St. Iakovos has throughout its 43-year history been a source of great charity to all God’s children without question to race, creed, or personhood. Over the last 20 years, St. Iakovos donated more the $625,000 to those in need and various charities. Our Parish Family has remained committed each of the last 25 years to supporting families from the public schools of Valparaiso and Portage at Christmas through gifts of food, and clothing and presents. Our Parish Family has always made known to every school system in Porter County that we can be turned to for help with students through our “St. Katherine’s Kloset” clothing program and through our support of school summer food programs. Our doors have always been open to helping and ministering to all.

The unfortunate and despicable display that occurred in downtown Valparaiso in no manner at all is reflective or connected with the teachings, life, and example of the St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church of Valparaiso and Porter County.
